Chapter 25

Kevin couldn't believe that he was up and going after only an hour of sleep, but he promised Michael he’d do a favor for him, and there was no way he was going to disappoint his best friend. He turned up the radio and lowered the windows of the truck to allow the wind to blow in on him, figuring these were two surefire ways to keep him from getting sleepy. He followed the directions on the GPS and was soon turning into a long driveway that led to a beautiful old farmhouse. It looked a lot like the one he'd heard Michael describe Kaitlyn's grandparents living in. He turned off the motor of the truck and stepped out when he saw an old couple walking toward him, smiling.

"Good morning', he said to the couple as they got closer. The older gentleman was dressed in overalls and boots, and his wife was wearing a dress that his grandmother often referred to as a house dress. They both had kind, welcoming faces.

"Good morning," the old man returned his greeting. "You're up and stirring around early on a Christmas morning."

"Would you care for a cup of coffee," the older lady asked, "I just made a fresh pot."

"Thank you for the offer, but I had a cup on the way here, and I'm trying to keep it to one cup a day," Kevin shared as he extended his hand toward the older couple. He imagined them living on this farm for years and years, surrounded by grandchildren and neighbors.

As they shook hands, the man said to him, "I'm Walter Chandley, and this is my wife, Ida. I'm pleased to meet you".

"You'll have to excuse my lack of manners this early in the morning," Kevin said with an embarrassed smile, "I'm Kevin Andrews, and the pleasure is mine."

"I'm guessing you want to see the puppies, huh?", Walter said as he walked back toward the house. "Follow me, and you can see them with their mama. We've had her since she was a baby. She's eight now, and this is only the second litter of puppies we've ever allowed her to have. My grandson was begging for a golden retriever like his Paw Paw's, and it's pretty hard for me to tell him no, so we figured we'd let her have one more litter before having her spayed."

"I don't know how you'd know if it's hard to tell our grandson no to anything; you've never done it," Ida said with a chuckle. "If that boy said that he wanted a castle, this old man would start building it brick by brick." Walter stuck out his tongue at his wife, but he didn't dispute her claim. Kevin laughed and followed the two inside and to the sun porch on the opposite side of the house. They opened the door, and a beautiful golden retriever lay stretched out on an expensive-looking orthopedic pet bed. "As you can see, he spoils more than just our grandson," Ida joked.
